We found these interactive alphabet flashcards several months ago and fell in love with them immediately. We collected them all: Space, Dinosaurs, Animals, and Octaland. I am sharing them with you today because 14 of my blogger friends are sharing zoo-themed activities for kids (scroll down to the end of the post to find them) and I thought the animal alphabet flashcards would complement the other zoo activities well. I hope you enjoy them as much as I do! They have major WOW factor because they actually come to life. So cool!

Animal Alphabet Flashcards

The cards are simply black and white pictures. Each card has a letter of the alphabet, the name of an animal that begins with that letter, and a picture of the animal.

To make the flashcards come to life we downloaded the free app onto the ipad. I also downloaded it onto my android so that both of the kids could play with the cards at the same time.

When we put a card onto the table and pointed the ipad directly at it a full color holographic image of the animal popped onto the screen! It was so realistic that my son actually jumped back from the holographic snake.

The program says the name of the animal and then the animal makes its noise. The holographic image will stay on the screen as long as the device is pointed at the card.

We explored inside the app and found some really cool features. We could make the image 3D and turn it around to see the animal from all sides. There is also a little blurb on the side about each animal that has some really fun facts.

There is also a feature to take a picture of the image and download it onto the device. This opens up the possibility to use these cards for school projects and enrichment activities.

Animal and Food Interaction

Our favorite feature is that some of the animals actually interact with food cards that come in the package! It’s magical to make the monkey come to life and then to place the bananas close and watch the monkey turn around and actually waddle over to the bananas to eat them. I admit that I have absolutely no idea how this augmented reality technology works!

There is a flower for the bee to pollinate, mosquitoes for the frog to catch, carrots for the rabbit, bananas for the monkey, and grass for the cow, horse, and elephant to munch.
